Paul Pender of Brookline possessed all the tools to win but lacked the will to use them and was knocked out in five rounds by Jimmy Beau, New Canaan, Conn., at the Garden last night. The final punch was a long right-hand smash to the chin which dropped Pender to his knees. At eight he made a weary attempt to get up, but referee Eddie Curley clasped him by the arms and called the shindig off. Pender insisted he was all right, but he didn’t know where he was – and didn’t seem to care, anyway, until Beau dumped him. The crowd of 3,197, lowest in some time, started hooting from the third round on. Pender was doing nothing but clutching Beau, who was digging smashes into the local’s tummy. Pender, always his own worst enemy, had absolutely no reflexes. Time and time again Beau had his chin protruding and invited Paul to hit him. But Pender just looked at him. It was a sad showing by Pender, who looked like such a great prospect a few months ago until he suffered a broken right hand.
