Pender nearly floored Hayes in the 5th round with a right hand to the jaw, with the bell saving Hayes. In the 6th round, Pender floored Hayes with a right to the jaw, for an eight-count. Hayes went down twice more in the 6th, for seven and three counts. Hayes came out for the 7th round, with his right eye almost closed. Pender would finish him with a left hand feint, followed by a right cross to the jaw. Hayes fell face down, and was counted out.
