Notes
- Charles and Beshore originally signed a contract on January 27 to fight on February 28, but the bout was postponed after Charles suffered a rib injury. The fight was rescheduled for March 29, but it was postponed indefinitely after it was discovered that the rib injury had bruised a heart muscle.
- On April 10, it was tentatively scheduled for June 7, under condition that heart doctors would clear Charles.
- In May, after at least two examinations, doctors determined that Charles would likely not be ready to enter the ring for at least 90 days.
- Finally, Charles passed the examination on July 5. Shortly afterwards, the bout was scheduled for August 15.
- Charles was a 3 to 1 betting favorite to win by a knockout.
- There were no knockdowns in the fight.
- United Press reported: "The small crowd booed Charles and Referee Barney Felix lustily when Felix stopped the bout because he regarded Beshore's swollen right ear as in a dangerous condition. The ear was so badly puffed that it appeared like a huge purplish bulb attached to blond Freddie's head."
- United Press further reported: "The paid attendance of 6,298 and gate of $28,666 were the lowest figures for a heavyweight title fight since Jack Dempsey won the crown 31 years ago."
