The Hebrew Hammer Returns To The Ring
- On September 7, 2012, in Tampa, Florida, Mark Weinman AKA 'The Hebrew hammer, returned to the ring after a 21 year layoff and knocked out Dominican boxer Elvis Luciano Martinez, 14 years his junior, in the second round. The 21 year layoff and return was unprecedented, but Weimnan, who remained in training and in top shape as a professional boxing trainer and who always spars regularly in the gym, never actually left boxing and as such he was never actually beyond reach of a 'comeback' against the correct opponent. Weinman, who fought at light middleweight between 153 and 156 pounds back in the day, returned to the ring in Florida as a fifty year old at 162 1/4 pounds-only six pounds above his last fight weight in 1991.
- The Weinman comeback at age 50 or older after a 21 yer layoff is rare by age and distance between pro bouts in terms of the history of the ring, but not unprecedented. It was tried by lightweight Kenny Lane, junior welterweight Saoul Mamby, and former heavyweight champion Jack Johnson.
