Santander Silgado Gelez 197 lbs beat Joell Godfrey 194 lbs by UD in round 8 of 8

Santander Silgado versus Joell Godfrey II Nontitle Rematch

Santander Silgado, a seven time Columbian amateur champion now fighting out of Brooklyn New York, went to 23-0, 18 KOs, won a shot at the vacant WBA Cruiserweight title against interim title holder 24-1 Denis Lebedev of Russia with an eight round decision win over Joell Godfrey in a rematch. Godfrey was a last minute opponent when the scheduled opponent pulled out and took the rematch. Quiet, boring bout, with Silgado abit busier landing occasional jab flurries to the body on a mostly defensive Godfrey, who countered where he could and fought a smart but overly cautious fight. The bout was far closer than the scoring. Godfrey saved his strength, and finally opened up and appeared to fairly win the eighth round on punch volume, but could not hurt Silgado or get him out. WBA champion Guillermo Jones pulled out of his scheduled title defense with Pennsylvania's Andres Taylor, and Jones would not fight interim champion Lebedev, necessitating the stripping of the world title, and thus providing the unbeaten and world ranked but relatively unknown Silgado the world title opportunity. Godfrey, now 16-9-1, 6 KOs, East St Louis, Illinois, is a far better boxer than his record indicates. Despite the Boxrec stating the contrary, the WBC Fecarbox Cruiserweight title held by Silgado and the vacant WBA Fedalatin Cruiserweight title were NOT at stake against Godfrey in this rematch, as the WBC and the WBA did NOT approve Godfrey as a title challenger as the last minute unscheduled opponent.
