Bob Fitzsimmons 165 lbs lost to Philadelphia Jack O'Brien 164 lbs by RTD in round 13 of 20

  • Date: 1905-12-20
  • Location: Mechanic's Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA
  • Referee: Eddie Graney
  • World 170 lbs Light-Heavyweight title
  • Noted ring announcer Billy Jordan introduced Fitzsimmons as the middleweight and the light heavyweight champion of the world.
  • Some say that although this bout is listed as a world light heavyweight title fight, it was in reality just an eliminator for the world heavyweight title. This is proven false by the fact that O'Brien became the lineal world light heavyweight champion by dethroning Fitzsimmons and that Fitzsimmons would not have considered the bout an eliminator. Ruby Robert "claimed" the heavyweight title after James J. Jeffries retired. His claim was not generally recognized. Marvin Hart, who defeated Jack Root on July 3, 1905 for the vacant title in a bout refereed by Jeffries, was considered Jeffries' true successor.
