Carlton set a fast pace in the first nine rounds, as he stayed on Bass. Carlton faded badly in the last round, allowing Bass to win decisively and perhaps secure the draw. Carlton put Bass down in the 7th round, for a two-count, with what the Jersey Journal felt was a push. Bass hurt Carlton in the 2nd round with a right to the chin, but was wild following up.
