McLean got off to a good start, taking three of the first four rounds, as he had Morgan "woozy" with a right hand in the 2nd round, and had him bleeding from the nose. Morgan took over in the 5th round, and had McLean almost out on his feet in that round. Morgan scored repeatedly with his left hook in the bout. McLean also almost went down in the 8th round, after two right hands to the head.

The Los Angeles Evening Express gave McLean a bid edge in the first rounds, but stated it was Morgan's fight entirely after that. The Express reported that Morgan was badly cut over his left eye in the 2nd round.
