Kid Gavilan 144 lbs beat Vinnie Rossano 149 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1948-02-13
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
  • Rossano down in the 4th
"...Gavilan was the whole show....The Havana hot-shot really poured it on, and Rossano, a Brooklynite who had copped seven of nine Garden starts, never had a chance. Sharpshooting a left and rocketing hard rights to the midriff and head, Gavilan glittered through 10 rounds, never losing one – not on this ringsider’s chart, anyway.
He was as silky-smooth as his long, glistening hair as he jabbed, feinted and wove a perfect punching pattern. He clubbed Rossano to the canvas with a right for a one-count in the fourth round after all but knocking him stiff in the second. Rossano, who sported a 149½ to 144¼ weight pull, kept going gamely but took a real lacing for his effort.
From the round of applause, Gavilan, whose real moniker is Gerardo Gonzales, was worth the $59,422 gate all by himself." -Gene Ward, Daily News
