Ike Williams 140 lbs beat Jose Maria Gatica 138 lbs by KO at 2:09 in round 1 of 10

  • Date: 1951-01-05
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
  • Referee: Ray Miller

Gatica rushed into a left hook to the head as the battle opened. He bounced back from this thrust with a succession of eager, if misdirected, lunges at the champion and then started hitting the canvas.

A left hook to the jaw put Gatica down for the count of three. Bewildered and unable to take advantage of the customary nine-second count, Gatica slowly regained his feet and held on to the ropes. Referee Ray Miller pried his gloved fists free.

Williams found an opening and shot another devastating left hook to the jaw after a right that had bloodied Gatica's nose. He crumpled in the corner, this time for a count of six. Gatica came up from this knockdown to stagger into a volley of lefts and sharp rights to the jaw. Down he went again, out cold. He had to be carried to his corner and after a respite from the ring.
