Scoring: 114-114 draw. 115-113, 117-111 Perez.

  • A taller Johan Perez won a majority decision over an aging Paul Spadafora to win the WBA interim World Light Welterweight title at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack Resort. Perez, now 18-1-1, 12 knockouts, began scoring with his jab on Spadafora consistently form the middle rounds onward and clearly just won the bout. However, if one more round had turned for Spadafora on two of the the three scorecards, the bout would have been a draw. With the loss, Spadafora, 38 years old, failed-in his first title bout in more than a decade-to equal Rocky Marciano's accomplishment of 49 consecutive bouts without a loss.

Others who fell short after a 48 bout unbeaten streak include Larry Holmes, Brian Nielsen, Chris John and Dariusz Michalczewski. The loss also extinguished the possibility of Spadafora's distant chance of a future bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. at 147 pounds. A title rematch with the Venezuelan Perez is possible.

  • Spadafora's last world title bout was in 2003, when he drew with 21-0 Leonard Dorin for the IBF, IBC, and WBA World Lightweight titles before abandoning his weight class to move up to light welterweight and seek a title shot there. It took a decade to get the chance at 140 pounds, perhaps the world record for persistence by an unbeaten world champion.
