  • Judge: 80-72
  • In the main event of an eleven bout card at BB King Blues Club & Grill in New York City, junior middleweight Boyd Melson scored a unanimous eight round decision win over journeyman Gundrick King. Melson, who donates 100% of his purse to justadollarplease.org to help cure Chronic Spinal Cord Injuries, was in control throughout, chasing King down all night and scoring with power head jabs and some body shot combinations. King actually did land the occasion counter to remain competitive. Midway through the fifth round, Melson had King ready to go when suddenly several boards fell off the front of the ring on the side closest to New York State Athletic Commision officials, creating a sag in one part of the ring, forcing a stoppage in the action by referee Earl Brown.

NYSAC Commissioner Melvina Lathan called in several workmen to shore up the ring. After a five minute break in the action, the bout resumed. King, getting a breather, rallied in 'the second half' of the fifth round as Melson squared up in front of him and King was landing some good power shots. Melson won the sixth, seventh, and eighth, and every round on the cards, returning to his jab. Melson noted after this bout the slightly shorter king had a chunky midsection which proved resistant to power shots. "I tried knocked him out with liver shots in the later part of the bout, but his flab absorbed my power shots. This guy went the distance with Yuri Foreman," noted Melson after the bout.
