- Kubrat Pulev was the mandatory challenger for a shot at Wladimir Klitschko's IBF World Heavyweight title at the time of this bout
- Fought for the IBF Intercontinental Heavyweight title. Pulev retains his regional title. Joey Abell was a late sub who took the bout on one week's notice for Sherman Williams who pulled out. Abell landed some good shots in the first round on Pulev, a slow starter. Pulev lacked power, as his right hand power shots and right hand jabs scored on Abell but did not do damage. Abell looked winded by the third round, however. Pulev used a jab to the body to drop Abell in the third and three more times in the fourth. Abell beat the counts, and even put Pulev down with a hook to the head for a flash knockdown when Abell caught Pulev off balance. Abell did not answer the bell for the fifth round. This is normally ruled a retirement.[[1]]
