- John Nater arrived from Puerto Rico four pounds overweight, but managed to work the pounds off and make weight for Maldonado before the weigh-in. However game, losing the weight left Nater somewhat depleted before the bout with dangerous Fidel Maldonado Jr., a hard hitter. Nater went down and took the count to eight twice, once each in rounds three and four. Nater was unable to answer the bell for the next round.
