Tommy Gerrard beat Jack Crawford by PTS in round 8 of 8
- Date: 1922-07-21
- Location: Troxler's Arena, Newark, New Jersey, USA
Jack Crawford died the next day from injuries sustained during this bout.
Kehler: According to the 7-22-1922 edition of the "Newark Evening News": "Girard handled Crawford with surprising ease. He landed his right so hard and so often that on several occasions he had the South Orange boy wobbling on his feet and groggy, particularly in one session, the third, when a right cross staggered Crawford and almost sent him to the canvas". The newspaper added that: "Crawford fought Oliver Gardner on Monday night...and took many hard punches to the jaw, was also the recipient of many a hard slam on the chin and head last night." The article noted: "Crawford, who relies entirely upon his punch to carry him through his bouts and has no defense whatever, was slow and lumbering last night, unusually slow and easy to hit. In the seventh round he also took a hard punching from his rival."
