Watanabe was stripped of his WBA title before the bout for failing to defend against their top contender Eusebio Espinal. Poontarat was knocked down in the 5th round by a right hook to the jaw, and down in the 11th on a left to the chin.. Poontarat lost one point for low blows in the 7th round.
