Mike Jones 147 lbs lost to Jaime Herrera 147 lbs by RTD at 3:00 in round 7 of 10
- Date: 2014-08-23
- Location: Bally's Event Center, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA
- Referee: Albert Earl Brown
- In the main event of a fight card promoted by Peltz Promotions at Bally's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, unknown 11-2 Jaime Herrera pulled off one of the welterweight division's biggest upsets and the biggest upset in Atlantic City in recent memory, soundly defeating former top contender Mike Jones. Despite two years inactivity, Jones landed fast jabs and speedy combinations in the first three rounds, winning the early rounds easily. In the second, Jones landed an eight punch combination near the bell which sent Herrera to the canvas. Herrera beat the count but was out on his feet, bouncing off the ropes, and Herrera appeared done. Referee Earl Brown gave him another chance, though, as the round had ended. Herrera came out in the third round landing well placed power shots and was winning the round, till Jones dropped him for the second time with a well placed liver shot. Herrera beat the count, and upon getting up Herrera appeared angry and ready to take the bout to the next level.
- In the exchange which ensued, Jones appeared overconfident, and somehow Jones and Herrera clashed heads, causing a deep cut on the corner of Jones' right eye. Herrera continued to target Jones' bloody eye cut, which Jones' corner was unable to resolve, forcing Jones to keep his right glove up to protect it. Herrera countered with both hands over Jones remaining left hand, and Herrera's accurate blows quickly closed up Jones good left eye.
- Jones fought the last four rounds with the left eye shut, with blood from his right eye cut affecting his vision. Herrera staggered the near blind and helpless Jones around the ring for four consecutive rounds. After the bell ending round seven, the ringside physician stopped the lopsided contest to prevent Jones from getting seriously hurt. Although Jones led on the three scorecards 66-65 and scored two knockdowns, Herrera gave Jones a brutal beating for the last four rounds of the contest. Not a close bout. Jones fatal flaw was his misguided belief Herrera was a limited fighter. Herrera had considerable power. Once Jones got hit and got hurt, he was done. Not only was Herrera not an 'opponent', Herrera showed heart and courage by getting off the canvas twice, surviving and taking the fight to Jones, and in the end, perhaps doing enough damage to end Jones' career.
