- In the main event of a Nate Tubbs fight card in Cincinnati, former amateur lightweight standout Mel Crossty, an active top sparring partner for world class lightweights who has been in the gym the past two years despite not taking a fight, scored a six round unanimous decision win over last minute opponent Greg Coverson Jr., the son of former lightweight contender Greg Coverson. Crossty looked a bit rusty, and Coverson was in shape and tried to win. Crossty's jabs were frequent and he clearly outworked Coverson Jr., though Coverson was in the house and gave a good accounting of himself. After the bout, Nate Tubbs stated Crossty would fight the main event in his next card in Cincinnati in August. 30 percent of the ticket sales went to the nonprofit Nate Tubbs Group Home and Amateur Youth Programs, which Tubbs founded after his son Nate Tubbs Jr. and brother Derrick Tubbs were murdered on the streets of Cincinnati. Tubs, a heavyweight whose record included a knockout win over the late former heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders, is the brother of former heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs AKA TNT.
