Holly Mims 155 lbs beat Garland Edwards 159 lbs by PTS in round 9 of 9
- Date: 1949-02-28
- Location: Turner's Arena, Washington, District of Columbia, USA
- The reason for the odd distance of nine rounds was a compromise. Edwards wanted eight, but Mims, who appears to get better as the fight progresses, wanted 10. So they tossed a coin, and the coin landed on its edge. Nine rounds won out.
Holly Mims finally is the champion of Garland Edwards. These two local middleweights ended their rivalry last night at Turner's Arena, with Mims taking the nine-round fight. His slugging toward the end proved superior to Edward's boxing skill. It was their fourth meeting. Edwards won the first, the second was a draw, and Mims won the third. Last night's battle was a s hot as their previous ones. [Evening Star, March 1, 1949, page 17]
