    Al Ahrens went before the investigating committee of the Amateur Athletic Union, Pacific Association, and "cleared himself." But he had claimed that there was an organized ring of bettors who controlled the actions of many amateur boxers. Sept. 25 SF Call' [2]

    Prizefighting in California at this time was illegal. An 1899 law allowed amateur boxing exhibitions staged by private athletic clubs, so many pro or "semi-pro" boxers fought as "amateurs" for "training expenses," not for illegal prizefighting purses, it was asserted.
