In previous bouts, Cox took fights at the last minute unprepared. However, he had been in the gym for more than six months well-prepared for an opportunity fight which could come along, and was ready for this encounter. Cox came in as a last minute substitute for Ignacio Esparza of Mexico, who pulled out.
