Dan Long fought without result James J Jeffries by ND in round 6 of 6

  • According to the Los Angeles Herald this was the feature of a benefit for Jim Jeffries and was really an exhibition. There were two four rounders followed by six rounds between Joe Cotton a "negro pugilist" and Jack Jeffries, brother of the subject of the benefit. This was followed by a "battle royal" between four coloured men mssrs. Thompson, Smith, Whiteside and Harney. George Smith and Bill Aldrich were scheduled for ten rounds but in the fourth round Aldrich landed a punch which knocked Smith out for the full count. Then came the principal exhibition between Jeffries and Dan Long of the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

    "Just previous to this contest Mr Leavitt (the MC) introduced Hank Griffin, a coloured heavyweight, to the audience, announcing that Griffin would like to make a match with any 170-pound man in the state."
