Moyer was knocked down in the 5th round, before the bout was stopped.
"Carlos Monzon of Argentina retained his world middleweight title Saturday night against Denny Moyer of the USA as the Argentinian referee stopped the fight in the middle of the 5th round in an extremely controversial decision. Monzon had caught Moyer with a strong right to the chin that bounced the American halfway across the ring. Argentinian referee Lorenzo Fortunato at first counted Moyer up to eight, then he suddenly raised Monzon's arm for the victory. The ring was at once showered with dozens of apples and oranges from the crowd, which had cheered Monzon up to that moment but then began booing him and calling him "clown." Moyer immediately protested the decision in such a lively fashion that he did not look shaken at all. The champion walked out of the ring jeered by the crowd, which continued its barrage even after he left. The fight had been even up to the 5th round. Monzon was more aggressive but he had trouble placing his powerful blows on the 32 year old challenger. Moyer, who is several inches shorter than Monzon, managed to duck most of Monzon's punches, striking back with precision and speed, keeping up with the champion to make the fight a nip and tuck affair until the middle of the 5th." -Associated Press
