Monzon always respected Briscoe, and when the champion was in New York, he gave Briscoe a warm greeting.

"Carlos Monzon of Argentina proved again his mettle as world's middleweight champion, jabbing out a 15-round decision over a determined but outclassed Bennie Briscoe of Philadelphia. Neither Monzon nor Briscoe scored a knockdown in the punchout, although Briscoe stunned Monzon with a right hook in the 9th and once again in the 14th with a hard right that made the champion stagger for a moment. Monzon himself, opened a cut over Briscoe's right eye in the 10th." -Associated Press
