• Newman carefully jabbed and outboxed the hands down showboating and clowning and countering Kpadenou, who tried to psych out Newman with some Emanuel Augustus style tactics that did not work.
• Newman said after the bout he went for the win on points but took no chances with Kpadenou, from Benin, a fighter with a winning record nobody knew much about, stating the number of rounds did not matter.
• Originally scheduled for six rounds, cut to four rounds due to the delayed start of the untelevised portion of the Al Haymon Premier Boxing Champions undercard.
