- Second attempt to win the WBO title by Jessie Vargas, after losing a 12 rounder to Timothy Bradley in 2015.
- First bout for Vargas with new trainer Dewey Cooper. Vargas knocked down Sadam Ali in rounds eight and nine in bout which wasn't close.
- With Ali doubled over, Vargas landed a brutal body shot followed by a right to the head to knock him out on his feet and win the vacant WBO world title.
