Chuck Davey, 148 1/2, Detroit, won a ten-round decision over Chico Vejar, 148 1/2, Stamford, Conn. Vejar was on the canvas four times during the bout. Vejar was dropped mostly from body punches as the sharpshooting Davey piled up points. Davey punished Chico with tantalizing right jabs and hooks and had Vejar in trouble on many occasions. In the last two rounds, Vejar made a spectacular rally that had the fans standing and cheering throughout. Vejar was chopped down twice in the first round by left hooks to the chin. Vejar was bent over like a wet rag from a left to the stomach in the sixth and again in the seventh. "Davey hit me in the stomach in the first round," Vejar recalled afterward. "I got a cramp there, and it stayed with me throughout. I felt strong but had no reflexes. Davey is good, and he's ready to face Gavilan or anybody."
