Chico Vejar 149 lbs lost to Chuck Davey 147 lbs by KO at 1:58 in round 5 of 10
- Date: 1952-06-25
- Location: Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Michigan, USA
Cautious Chico, who held a two-pound weight advantage over Davey, 149 1/2, protected his tender mid-section well during the first four rounds, but was caught by surprise in the fifth. Referee Charles Weber separated the two from a clinch and Davey struck with catlike speed. He dug his talented left hand to Vejar's body and doubled him up. A flurry of punches to the head followed with Vejar's hands dangling at his side. Finally, Davey set his opponent up for another driving left to the stomach and it was all over. The time was 1:58. Although unable to land any damaging blows during the first four rounds, Davey had a slim edge in points on the cards of the three ring officials when the knockout came. Remembering well the four knockdowns he suffered in his initial match with Davey, Vejar stayed close and forced many clinches. He made only one mistake and Davey didn't miss the opportunity.
