Abe Hollandersky lost to Frankie Fowser by PTS in round 20 of 20

  • Date: 1915-02-28
  • Location: Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico
  • The exact date of this bout is difficult to determine. Hollandersky was back in New London by early June of 1915, and had headed to the Southwest around February of 1915. According to an article in New London's The Day, for June 24, 1915, pg. 3, Hollandersky suffered from an illness of several weeks during this time which may have been precipitated by his travels to the Southwest, and the unsanitary conditions in Agua Prietta, the Mexican bordertown from Douglas, Arizona where he fought Fowser. According to the El Paso Herald, Thursday, pg 6, February 18, 1915,"Soccer Seems Made for San Jacinto Boys", Fowser was a very competent welterweight, with as good a claim to the welterweight world title as anyone, though this claim seems a bit exaggerated. Hollandersky was in El Paso on this date looking for a match and "expecting to be matched with Frankie Fowser". Hollandersky was promoted by the El Paso Herald in this article as having won the heavyweight championship of Panama in 1913, which was accurate, and the welterweight championship of Panama as well, which was a bit exaggerated, though he had vied for the title against Eddie Ryan, and would try again later in 1917 against Pat Kiley. It is likely Abe fought Fowswer between February 18, 1915 and March 18, 1915, when he appeared in Fort Worth, Texas, according to the Fort-Worth Star-Telegram for March 19, 1915, to wrestle Jimmy Pappas at the Savoy Theatre on April 2. But there is a small chance Hollandersky fought Fowswer earlier or he left Fort Worth and fought Fowswer in March, April, May or June, though he would have had to come from Fort Worth, Texas to Aquaprietta, Mexico, a distance of 863 miles, making a date between February 28, and March 28 a reasonable approximation.
