Palmer knocked Sekyra down twice in the first round, with Sekyra getting up before taking a knee for the full nine count both times, which proved to be controversial with both the Dayton Herald and Dayton Daily News feeling that he should have been disqualified. Sekyra dominated the remainder of the bout, as Palmer was largely unable to follow up his earlier attack. Sekyra hurt Palmer in the 5th round, and wore him down with a body attack in the middle rounds. Both began to tire in the 9th round, as the bout became more of a slugging match.
