  • Number seven worldwide ranked BoxRec southpaw lightweight scored a tenth round stoppage over game but outmatched 15-0 prospect Jamal Herring.Herring, a tall fighter with reach advantage, battled on and actually did well in a few rounds, landing some power shots in rounds four, five and six despite getting hit. Shafikov's challenge as the shorter but stronger fighter was to get inside, cut off the ring, and score with with Herring near or on the ropes. Shafikov patiently boxed for opportunities, and did best in round nine, where the tiring Herring got hit with a number of massive power shots but took them well and indicated to the referee he wanted to continue. In round ten, with furious power shots landing on Herring, Herring's trainer came onto the edge of the ring and stopped the bout to save his fighter from serious injury, ending the contest even though Herring wanted to continue. Herring's 15 bout resume did not include the sort of world class experience Shafikov's 40 bout resume had. Nonetheless Herring took the opportunity bout, and indicated after the bout he would be back. Shafikov, in the post fight interview, indicated Herring "was one tough customer. He took my best shots for ten rounds."
