Despite being down for a nine-count in the 3rd round, Lawrence had built a comfortable lead going into the 11th round, according to the Dayton Herald, when he sustained a broken jaw. Lawrence wilted after this, and took a pounding as he tried to evade Curtin. Lawrence went down in the 12th round, at which point his corner threw in the towel.
The Dayton Daily News felt the bout was even at the time of the stoppage.
