WBO Inter-Continental Light Heavyweight Title

  • Final bout for Andre Ward before his scheduled world light heavyweight title bout with Sergey Kovalev to decide best pound-for-pound fighter.
  • Ward wins every round. Switching from orthodox style to southpaw, Ward kept Brand on the run with frequent jabs and power shots.
  • Brand tried to counter here and there, but nonstop pressure from Ward kept Brand mostly on the move in survival mode. Brand, in top condition, came to win, and took Ward's best power shots well when they landed. A few counters got through. Many missed. Brand survived the distance.
  • Referee Jack Reiss stopped the action in round 12 after an accidental headbutt. There was no blood, so the bout was allowed to continue till its conclusion. There were no knockdowns or fouls. WBF Super Middleweight champion Brand slipping to the canvas once, ruled no knockdown.
  • After the televised bout, Andre Ward turned and said to Sergey Kovalev in the ring "I'll see you in November. I've been doing it for 22 years."
  • "I think he's ready. I'm ready too. See you November 19." replied Sergey Kovalev, in the ring with Ward, shaking his hand as a sportsman.
  • Noted cutman Stitch Duran was in the corner of Ward. Neither fighter was hurt. Clean bout. The twelfth round was a bit better for Brand.
  • Opportunity bout for 432 amateur bout experienced 25-1 Brand, 39, who was happy to be the chance to fight Ward and fought gamely.
