Schmeling wrote in his Autobiography,

"In the second round Dieckmann caught me on the ear with one of his notorious hooks, and it started to bleed immediately. Between rounds my corner tried unsuccessfully to stop the bleeding. Two rounds later the referee stopped the fight".
