• Shimizu represented Japan in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He won a Bronze Medal at the latter.

• Noh was making his first defense of the OPBF title. He had won the title by upsetting Ryo Takenaka on June 8, 2017. Trailing on all three scorecards, Noh knocked Takenaka out in the 10th round.

• Shimizu came into the bout ranked #11 by the OPBF.
