Mickey Walker drew with Benny Cohen by NWS in round 8 of 8

  • Date: 1920-01-20
  • Location: Coliseum, Newark, New Jersey, USA

  • Mickey Walker with Joe Reichler, “The Toy Bulldog and His Times”:

The fight took place in Newark in 1920. Cohen was a knockout king in his own right and the fight was a slam-bang affair. Benny wasn’t letting his chance at the lightweight crown go to an Irishman–not without giving it all he had, anyway. We were both on the floor a couple of times. Cohen knew how to handle himself and he could hit, too. At first I thought he’d brought a hatchet into the ring with him, but then I saw that my left hook was doing as much damage as his right. We were hitting like sledge hammers, like pile drivers. The fans were standing on their seats.

The newspapers gave me the decision–unanimously. I got a five-hundred-dollar purse, the most money I had ever earned for one fight up to that time. It seemed like a million dollars.
