The bout was stopped after Hathaway began holding his right eye, in apparent pain. It was determined that he had been thumbed in the eye, and couldn't see. The bout was stopped. Later film was reviewed in Holmes' dressing room, that revealed that the injury came from three consecutive jabs to the head, followed by a right hand. "I didn't thumb him," said Holmes, who added "That right hand caught him high on the head. That's what did the trick."
