Leslie Wildcat Carter beat Tommy O'Leary by KO in round 3 of 6

  • Date: 1927-10-18
  • Location: Crystal Pool, Seattle, Washington, USA
  • A "scintillating boxing match." In the first canto "Carter took a count of two but was up and clawing at the count of three. The knockdown seemed to unleash all the hidden fury of the sensational Negro flash. He fought as if possessed, battered O'Leary all around the ring with a barrage of lefts and rights -- devastating as a tornado and as ferocious as the critter after which he was named.... [In the second there] were many who saw Referee Jones' arm swing--ten, eleven, twelve and thirteen--slowly, but surely, before O'Leary got up to face the storm again. No one protested.... The moment was fraught with such intense excitement that it is doubtful whether the referee remembers how many times he did swing his arm.... [Carter finally KO'd O'Leary in the third.] It was a spectacular battle and added much to Carter's prestige." Everett Daily Herald.
