Shaw substituted for Joe Borola, and deserved to win, according to the Santa Monica Evening Outlook. Punay staged a desperate last round rally that had Shaw hanging on, which may have swayed the referee. Shaw baffled Punay for much of the bout with a "shifty, peculiar style." Punay knocked Shaw down in the 4th round, for an eight-count with a heavy right hand to the body, while Punay was hurt in the 6th round
