The fistic faithful didn't care much today about whether Sugar Ray Robinson knocked southpaw Joe Curcio out in the first or second round at Madison Square Garden last night. They were wondering more about just what a walloper, short of Joe Louis himself, could handle welterweight Sugar Ray in the manner approved by the experts along scrambled ear alley. The Sugar man from Harlem took only one lump to stir up Joe, the southpaw swatter out of Jersey, for the entertainment of some 12,353 cash contributors. This "lump" of a left hook landed just as the bell rang ending the first round. And inasmuch as southpaw Joe was still flat on his back when the bell sounded to begin the second round, it didn't make much difference whether the folks figured the payoff should be for the first or second session.
