Matthews knocked Farmer down in the 1st round for a nine-count with a right to the stomach. Matthews knocked Farmer into the ropes for no-count early in the 2nd, before Farmer staggered him badly with a right hand to the jaw. Matthews took a terrible beating in the round, and was put down three times. The two engaged in a mostly competitive match after that, as Matthews was bleeding profusely from the nose and mouth. Farmer hurt Matthews again in the 9th round, and with Matthews defenseless along the ropes, referee Gorman stopped the bout.
