Edgar's boxing style was similar to that of Joe Louis; "both of them seek fistic success by standing flat-footed and raking their opponents with hard counter-punches..Neither bothers much with clever footwork. They are offensive fighters who depend upon power for their victories." LaMotta prefers to put his head down, tuck his chin in and charge into his opponents..He threw Edgar off balance and took the sting out of his punches. Edgar didn't have the footwork to get away from him; he had to stand his ground and punch with Jake, and that was what LaMotta wanted." There were no knockdowns but Edgar was hurt in round four and tired in the last three rounds. Even so, judge Frank Neville voted for him, but Referee Sam Hennessey and Judge Joe Lenahan scored it for LaMotta.
