The Cincinnati Enquirer described this as a close bout, but felt that Ryan won by out-hitting his rival in a majority of the rounds. Barrett who tried to land his powerful right hand repeatedly, had his best moment in the 6th round, when he put down Ryan for no-count with a right hand to the stomach.
