Hernandez convincingly defeated Marino. Marino did his best action in the first three rounds, particularly when he hurt Hernandez with a left hook to the jaw at the bell to end the 2nd round. Hernandez began to dominate the bout in the 4th round, and held the upper hand until late in the final round when Marino rallied. Hernandez's most effective blow in the bout was his sharp right hand.

The January 26, 1943 Honolulu Advertiser reported that Marino had been recovering from the flu as recently as Monday the week of the fight.
