Roberto Duran vs. Pepe Del Toro
Roberto Duran 139 lbs beat Pepe El Toro 137 lbs by KO at 2:00 in round 1 of 10
- Date: 1975-08-02
- Location: Managua, Nicaragua
This is the famous (or infamous) fight in which Duran knocked out a woman afterward.
Eleanora Baca, the fiance of Pepe Del Toro, whose real name was Pedro Mendoza, attacked Duran after the fight. She jumped into the ring, screaming, "I hate you. I hate You. You're the worst person ever to visit Nicaragua." She then struck Duran, only to have the champion swing back with a right to the jaw. As she collapsed, police moved in and escorted Duran to his locker room.
WBC president Ramon Velazquez said Duran should be removed from the WBC lightweight rankings for punching Baca. "I'm going to take it up with the ratings committee," Velasquez told UPI. "Only boxers who are a good example to young people should be recognized."
At the time, Duran was the WBA champion, while Guts Ishimatsu held the WBC title.
