Hector Mendez beat Al Mello by DQ in round 2 of 3
- Date: 1924-07-18
- Location: Velodrome d'Hiver, Paris, Paris, France
The United States lost close decisions today in the fights in which Al Mello, Lowell, Mass, George Milholland, Indianapolis, and Hugh Haggerty, Pittsburgh, were defeated. During the early part of the Mello-Mendez bout, the American mixed it with wicked rights and lefts, seriously rocking his rival. In the third round, however, the Lowell boy, worn out by the speed of the encounter, was so tired that he fell into a number of clinches. At one time the American’s action seemed involuntary. Mendez kept up a rapid cross-fire of rights and lefts and was at it when the bout ended. Boston Herald, Lowell Sun, Associated Press, July 19, 1924.
