- Date: 1935-09-09
- Location: Carlin's Park, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
- Referee: Buck Alexander
The managers of Bass and Portney, Heinie Blaustein and George Sheppard, respectively, fought each other after the stoppage. Sheppard broke Blaustein's nose, with police swarming the ring to break up the fight. Sheppard was arrested, and as he was leaving the ring, he was hit over the head by a bottle from Blaustein. Blaustein was arrested and charged with disorderly counduct and assault.
There was blood between both boxers at the start, as they nearly fought while they were receiving final instructions. Portney cut Bass' left eye in the first round with a hook. Bass was troubled by the cut, and was overwhelmed by Portney's attack. Portney staggered Bass in the 3rd round, but backed off in the 4th, which was Bass' best round. The cut had become very bad by then though, and the bout was stopped.
