According to the Seattle Times, through four rounds, Townsend had won two, Steele one, and one was even. Townsend had a big 5th round, as he caught Steele with a left hook to the chin, and chased him into a corner, whaling on him for much of the round, as he had a decisive edge. Steele returned the favor on Townsend in the 6th round, as he batter his foe around the ring. Townsend reeled around the ring once and fell, and collapsed in his corner at the final gong, though he was not seriously hurt.
Originally declared a win for Steele by Referee Schacht. But, as the bout was to be scored under the Australian system, which required a win by a three-point margin, the decision was changed to a draw.
