Chuck Davey, the former Michigan State College athlete, who built up such a tremendous following as idol of the TV fans, was handed a stiff jolt when upset by Al Andrews, of Superior, Wis. The performance by Davey was an even bigger surprise to his many backers, as Chuck showed little of any of the class that had gained him national fame and a shot at Kid Gavilan's welterweight title.
The outcome of the match was evident quite early, when the light hitting, but aggressive Andrews tagged Davey with a right hand in the second round that sent Chuck to the deck for an automatic eight count. Realizing he had to go all out in order to win, Chuck then tried hard to turn on the steam, but he just didn't have it as Andrews came back strong himself and took the last four rounds for the unanimous verdict. All three ring officials had Andrews an easy victor.
For their efforts, Davey, who scaled 147 pounds, received $9,685.29, and Andrews, who weighed 152, got $4,025.24. The fight itself drew a record 11,089 fans to the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Saginaw, which was the largest crowd to attend a sporting event in that city.
