This was a close fight entering the 8th round. In the 8th round, Payne landed a right hand that hurt Monroe and sent him to the ropes, where Payne floored him with an uppercut. Monroe clinched when he rose, but was floored by another uppercut from Payne. After Monroe rose again, Payne pounded away on Monroe along the ropes, until the stoppage came.
